About Us

Over 10,000 machines installed in 120 different countries around the world

Econocorp – originally named Lee Packaging Machinery – was founded by Dick Lee in 1956 as a custom packaging machinery company. After more than a decade in business, Dick pivoted the business to a more defined product line when he realized Econocorp’s custom model wasn’t sustainable for meeting the needs of end users in a variety of industries and applications.

The company’s trajectory as an industry innovator started early in the 1960s. Before the introduction of hot melt glue, a common industry challenge for sealing end load cartons was the management of cold glue, which required long compression tunnels on the end of cartoners, thus taking up valuable floor space.

Dick’s solution was the Econoseal/TwinSeal a simple carton sealer that utilized a vertical compression chamber, decreasing the amount of floor space required. This innovation pushed the company into the world of secondary packaging, and the rest (as they say) is history.

From there, Dick and the Econocorp team continued to innovate by creating a carton erector, then tackled product load challenges before expanding into tray forming and case packing. In fact, most of Econocorp’s R&D was a result of the market asking for solutions to common industry problems, which continues to be a core area of focus to this day.

In 1997, Wayne Goldberg and Mark Jacobson purchased Econocorp from Dick with a promise: They would continue the company’s trajectory as a small, innovative family-owned entity. Wayne first joined the company as an intern in college, working in the machine shop making parts. Dick, who was impressed with his work ethic, offered Wayne a full-time role. In 1976, shortly after graduating from UMass Amherst with a degree in Accounting, Wayne joined the Econocorp team full-time. He would also go on to earn his MBA from Northeastern University in 1988. Throughout Wayne’s nearly 50-year tenure, he has provided invaluable guidance and leadership that have been critical to the long-term success of the company.

Although Dick and Mark are no longer with us, we know they are looking over us and remain proud of everything we have accomplished and the exciting road we have ahead.

“Thanks to our founder, Richard Lee and Mark Jacobson. Dick was an incredible mentor. Mark, was the brother I never had and an incredible business partner. They both shaped my leadership and vision for our company’s future. I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to the entire team for your commitment and for embracing our journey together. To Sam, it has been incredible to watch your development; you’ve truly exceeded my expectations. I wish you all the best as you continue Econocorp’s journey.”

Next Generation Family Leadership

We’re proud that Econocorp remains a family-owned company. In 2020, Wayne’s son, Sam Goldberg, joined Econocorp full-time after graduating from Northeastern University with a degree in Accounting and Economics. But that’s not Sam’s first experience with Econocorp. Much like his father before him, Sam has worked at the company since he was in high school, where he started building sub-assemblies and machines in the summers. Throughout high school and college, Sam has worked in every department and currently serves as Econocorp’s Chief Operating Officer and a key member of the Leadership Team, driving the company into an exciting future.
